Shot for under £150 on an iPhone, Shopony's stripped-down set-up allows the talent and chemistry of the two lead actors to shine. In just four minutes and thirty seconds, Showpony uses unsettling humour to explore the important issue of emotional abuse in relationships. The naturalism of Sophie Lowe’s performance gives the audience a glimpse behind the scenes of an audition tape - the soul-crushingly, awkward and vulnerable parts that nobody should ever see, especially if the person filming is your gaslighting toxic partner. Sophie Lowe stars in the suspense thriller The Dive, which premiered at Munich Film Festival in June. Her co-star Michael Socha (This Is England) has just starred in the highly anticipated BBC and A24 collaboration, The Gallows Pole.
Director Clare Hoey says: 'I made this film because after working as a screenwriter for years, I realised I wanted to finish telling my own stories through directing. I had no grounding in the production or technical side, but I wanted to tell a story as simply as possible, and this was the only short film I could afford to fund myself. The audition set up makes a virtue of shooting on an iPhone, making the world feel more realistic and relatable. It's almost like found-footage from the horror story of this relationship, like the Blair Witch of toxic London creative couples. Sophie is a friend of mine, and Showpony is inspired by her real experiences of recording self-tapes with boyfriends who were also actors, and would try to sabotage her auditions whenever the role required her to be "a sexy woman" (which unfortunately was most of the time).'
