The film takes place on a sinking WWII warship that has just been struck by a torpedo and is rapidly going under. Florence's captain, a war veteran and decorated hero, experiences a crisis of faith—worrying, for the first time in his life, that perhaps he might come across as desperate. He instructs his Morse code operator to send out a distress message but urges him to avoid sounding 'overbearing' — resulting in a confused and frustrated lifeboat team who ultimately decide to 'sack it off'.
The biggest challenge on this project was the setting and making it look as realistic as possible for the joke to land. Florence remembers writing the thing and saying to herself, 'Just write a cool script, worry about the budget after'...but when it got to the 'after' bit, the challenge of making this look as though it was taking place on an actual sinking WWII ship came to fruition. But she thinks this is where naive optimism can become a superpower… she suggested a Dutch tilt, some great sideways acting from our cast, and a corker of a DOP (Matthew Emvin Taylor). And look, it worked.
