Grown

Directed by

14-year old Isa finesses her way into spending the afternoon with her big brother's best friend.

14-year old Isa is left home alone for the weekend while her mom takes her big brother on a college campus tour. When her brother's best friend Telly comes by the house looking for him, it becomes clear that Isa has a crush on Telly. She finesses her way into spending the afternoon with him under the pretense of wanting to buy weed. In order to impress him, Isa initiates a dine and dash. It works. The pair wind up sneaking into a friend's pool whose family is away for the summer. Once she finally makes her move and kisses him, Isa is confronted with the clear gap in their age and expectations.

The director Jamila Meloche notes: 'Something that was important to me while making Grown was creating a female character that was bold from the start. Too often in coming of age stories we get these reserved female characters whose arc involves coming out of their shell. I really wanted a girl who was immediately fierce and who was driving the majority of the narrative rather than reacting to it.The film explores the way we set boundaries. It’s something that I’ve felt a lot of personal confusion around throughout my life and though society has started to find clearer language for it, it can remain gray and difficult in practice. I wanted a film that would help explore and address the complexity of consent and inspire audiences towards a broader perspective. There is often the assumption that assault is committed by strangers, or that it must be forceful in nature. This only represents one end of the spectrum. Assault is often committed by people we trust and we can even be unaware that it is occurring. Young people are especially vulnerable to this. I wanted to make a film that explores the subtle nature of consent and the confusion around it. I was interested in verbal versus nonverbal consent, power dynamics of age and gender, and coercion. It was important to me to make a film that does not give a direct solution to the problem we face but rather sparks conversation around it. I hope Grown opens a conversation towards a clearer societal understanding of consent.'
