Chip Shop Girl

In Northern England, 1995, a teenage mum with a mixed race daughter works a shift at her local chippy and faces a racist customer.

The short film Chip Shop Girl by Emma Kayani is inspired by her mother, who had Emma when she was 16 and her aunt who worked in a chip shop in Sheffield in the 90's where Emma was born and raised. Emma wrote the script in lockdown with the idea of telling a story from the perspective of a white teenage mother who has a mixed race child.

Emma further says: 'The track 'Fairground' reminds me of my mum and days we would switch on MTV and be together, she always said she loved Simply Red and that track in particular is her favourite. The track to me is about embracing youth, fun and carefree joy, something my mum and the main character of the film doesn't feel they are able to do anymore having to grow up, work and be a mother at 16. But for that brief moment in the film where the track is used she feels fleetingly free and 'at home'. My relationship with my mum now has become estranged and the film serves as a letter of understanding and acceptance to how it must have felt to be on the outskirts of society and her social circle in the 90's and never having space or freedom to find yourself.I want to tell more stories on screen of underrepresented people (bi-racial, young children in dysfunctional homes) and non-traditional families (step sisters, fathers, mixed families) and incorporate elements that are unique to my vision and way of coping in life with realism and dream-like wonder.'
