The London-based singer-songwriter Bree Runway has dropped her second single of the year, 'Somebody Like You,' and English/French director Claire Arnold, produced by Amara Rossell for Ground Work, follows the song's idea with this episodic video, 'you know this type of love is '‘bad’' but in the end… it should be you that holds the cards to your destiny.'
In three parts the choreography, outfits and set design change to make our heroine the complicated lover that she is. Claire collaborated closely with the stylist Anna Treylevan to create mystical, theatrical and symbolic looks. Looks that came to life in the production design - designed by Sarah Asmail- which plays with our perception of space using simple and effective visual illusions.
Bree, '[the song is] an ode to my future lover, in a generation where love and relationships have become so transactional, I’m still preserving myself for the real thing. ‘Somebody like you’ – he is also like me, he will see value in a love that can’t be bought, it simply just is. It can be such an empty, soulless generation but in all of that I am still sure there is a precious diamond in all the dirt for me.'
Claire Arnold, 'The beat of this track pulled on the heartstrings of some iconic late 80s early 90s romantic power pop ballads. Dramatic looks, commanding performances, and full of fantasy – it made me think of Shakespeare's Sister and how cosmic but also chaotic their world was in the video for 'stay'.he pain … and the freaky in their performance... is a really fun dichotomy and this was a mood we wanted to balance across Bree's film and choreographic storytelling brought to life by Nat and Kane KZ Creatives.
I collaborated with the super talented Sarah Asmail on the set design to create each scene. We attempted to do the most with what we had.. and there was very much a challenge in creating scale and perspective to match the 'epic feeling' of the track within a studio context. Technically we used backdrops, set design, projectors and strong lighting embracing the theatrical aspects of these mediums. Builds + Painted Backdrops created ‘trompe l'oeil’ style scenes to trick perspective was a key component to building the SLY world.
