Crying in Spanish

A modern Spanish opera paying homage to a childhood nursery rhyme

A modern Spanish opera pays homage to the childhood nursery rhyme where a prima donna, through a triptych of acts, passionately sings to soothe herself, culminating in a cathartic release of a single tear.

The concept is a modern take on a nursery rhyme titled Sana Sana that Latin American kids grow up meant to soothe a hurting child. Inspired by classic opera storytelling our prima donna is immersed in a triptych of acts ranging in emotions as she sings passionately soothing herself into releasing a single tear. It is a collaboration between directors Shihan Fé Blanca Fahim and Vanessa Granda with our singer Karina Fernandez from the band Spicy Dreams. We came up with an original song in Spanish, our native language, that plays on this nursery rhyme but with a modern twist in it's instrumentals and visuals. Visually we wanted it to feel like a stage play where each act feels different from the others. Our first act is more vintage feeling, while our second act more modern with our final act feeling hopeful and dreamy.

Made as a collaboration between long term friends Cuban-Lebanese director/photographer Vanessa Granda and Morrocan-Argentinian director and producer Shihan Fé Blanca Fahim, this piece was created to celebrate their shared Hispanic heritage.

As Vanessa Granda says: 'We have been friends for 10 years and wanted to work on something that celebrates our heritage. Initially, it started with the idea of creating a modern version of a nursery rhyme that is famous in Hispanic culture. The rhyme "Sana Sana" is sung to children usually to help alleviate pain or sadness and we wanted to make an adult version of this song as we ourselves are grown up but at times have felt sadness or pain. This is our grown up version.'
