Wanna Believe U

A story of how a connection, that once felt impenetrable, can fall apart, piece by piece, or in this case — square by square.

'Wanna Believe U' is a poetic rendition that explores the journey of connection to disconnection in one relationship.  On the surface, 'Wanna Believe U' is another break-up song. While constructing the story, the director Ja'Lisa Arnold discovered that the lyrics were written in mourning of the lead singer’s fallout with a close friend. This revelation added so much depth and nuance, and this song about pain and heartbreak became even more devastatingly beautiful. It also reiterated a big theme the director, band, and their community were experiencing in their lives at the time. As a group of twenty-somethings floating through life and relationships, they were all going through heartbreak in some form or another. A few were with romantic partners but a lot of those heartbreaks were experienced  from completely platonic relationships — close friends, family members, mentors, and all other loved ones. Some of these relationships change people more than others, but every single break-up is brutal and heart-wrenching, nonetheless.

Before Ja'Lisa and the band settled on the story we come to see in the video, they considered several approaches. Given the time constraints of the 2-minute song, they decided to focus on one romantic relationship that would give the viewer the quickest gut punch.

The world of the film and its characters was meticulously built because to ensure the story felt universal. The team's biggest goal was that someone could watch the video and feel connected to it because it reminded them of a relationship in their life.

As Ja'Lisa notes: 'You may never know the true meaning behind a piece of art, but the truth is, you don’t need to. That visceral emotion it makes you feel is all you ever need to know.'
