'Guilt Juice' is a relatable story about a young woman is plagued with regrets when she steals some of her housemate’s orange juice. Rather than having an angel on her shoulder to steer her from moral failure, she has a giant eye in her mould infested wall. But is the scale of self-criticism warranted, or is there a little exaggeration at play?
Director Emma Parkinson says: 'According to my friend, this film is ‘very normal and not at all revealing of your inner neuroses.’ While I’d like to add a disclaimer that my anxieties are not quite as intense as our protagonist’s, this film was certainly a therapeutic exercise. Guilt can of course be a very healthy, pro-social emotion, but the politics of co-renting in London can wreak havoc on those more prone to a heavy conscience. The film’s stark grey kitchen, designed by Richard Nik Evans, draws inspiration from the bleak Airbnb-esque rentals so many Londoners find themselves resigned to. For many young people, ‘home’ means black mould, cheap hardware, and an argument waiting to happen. Oof. All this said, we had a great and very silly time making this film! Grace Lyons, our protagonist, did an excellent job of chugging orange juice from a frankly horrifying looking funnel device while sat in a paddling pool in the kitchen. We shot in my own rented flat (shh!), with production team Jack and Lottie going above and beyond to keep my deposit intact. It’s my first time working with such an extensive puppetry build, and I loved the horrible, horrible eye. What a joy getting to work with the one and only Ruth Bratt for the VO! There are lots of incredibly animal noises buried into the soundtrack if you listen closely (Tom Keats on the Sound Design). The whole thing wouldn’t have been possible without the support and financing of Blink, and the Exec Eye of Patrick Craig, who was my own, much nicer, eye in the wall.'
