Fresh from a night out at yesterday’s wake, 'Rent-A-Mourner' Charlie turns up to her next funeral late, tired, and hungover. Another day at the office. But when the morning/mourning takes an unexpected turn, she must come face to face with a deeply buried secret from the past.
This absurd dark comedy centres around Charlie, someone hired to attend empty funerals. Having done this job for several years, Charlie knows the psalms back to front, the hymns side to side, and can shed a tear just by looking at a bible. Every job is an opportunity to party when there’s a buffet and free wine. But Charlie’s avoidant meaningless lifestyle is thrown off course the day she turns up late, tired, and hungover to the funeral of Dean Smith. Having not read the “infosheet” about the deceased’s identity, it is only when Charlie goes up to the pulpit to do a speech, and lays her eyes on the order of service, that she realises she know this man. A man she hasn’t seen for a very long time. Suddenly Charlie's perfectly orchestrated world starts to unravel, as she battles with legacy, loss, and taking control of the narrative.
Written by Toto Bruin and directed by Charlotte Hamblin, who's previous film Everybody Dies also steers into the world of dark comedy featuring death (and which you can watch on our site too).
Charlotte says: 'When Toto approached me to direct this film, I could hardly say no. I'd never heard of a 'rent-a mourner'. The very idea to me was absurd, but I loved it and wanted to tell this story. Toto's writing is whip smart and I love anything that deals with any kind of taboo surrounding death. But what I loved about this story in particular is there was something more serious, more terrifying at its heart. On the surface a zany comedy, at its heart a deeply tragic narrative. We all worked so hard to deliver that fine line between comedy and tragedy and the performances in this film are testament to that. The actors, producers and crew worked tirelessly to bring this story to life and I'm very proud to have played a part in it.'
