Growing Old is about two sisters who echo over time, navigating the challenges of being separated by distance and time. The visual diary shows how time always keeps moving, and the transformative power of the magic that comes with every new life stage.
The short is the second part of a series focusing on sisterhood. The first video, "About Two Girls," was created in 2020 when the director lived with her sister in Amsterdam. It explores the close and carefree bond between sisters during their mid-twenties. 'Growing Old' made a few years later, delves into the next life-changing phase in their relationship during their early thirties.
The director Ayla Spaans says of the process: 'When my younger sister was in the final days of her pregnancy, I had the chance to spend some time with her before she became a mother. She lives in Portugal, and I was visiting her for a month when I got the idea to shoot her journey to motherhood on film. We both live a distinct life in different countries. Four years ago, we made a film called About Two Girls about our sisterhood when she was living with me in Amsterdam. This new film, Growing Old, is about Time and Change and became, without us realizing it, part two of a lifelong series about our sisterhood. During our time together, waiting for the baby's arrival, we went to the beach, strolled around flea markets, and enjoyed walks in nature. Meanwhile, I planned the shoot. I wanted to work with whatever came my way that month. With that mindset, I found for example a beautiful music box at one of the flea markets, which is now featured in the film. Additionally, I was lucky enough to find a talented local team that came together perfectly. When the baby was born, I analyzed everything that happened. I observed her rhythm, sleep patterns, and bathing routines, trying to understand her needs. I prepped everything in advance for the shoot, and one month later, I returned to my sister's house to shoot the film with her lovely baby. We shot everything in two days on 16mm film, and to be flexible and fast, we worked with a very small team and only used natural light. We started the day by setting an intention. I wanted to create a lovely day under good circumstances. We had to go with the flow, try to follow the plan, but also be flexible if the baby needed something different. My oldest sister came over to help with the baby, make great food, and prep all the art in advance. It was wonderful to do this shoot with my two sisters. It felt really powerful to work with a sister team supported by an amazing stylist and DOP, capturing this life-changing period of me and my younger sister.'
