When filmmakers Eva Babington and Naomi Rachel Smith sent a survey asking people about their periods, it came back with the most intimate, personal and thoughtful responses. It showed that when given a space to speak about periods, people really need to. However, 78% of these respondents thought that their menstrual education was inadequate at preparing them for their later experiences. So, what happens when no one tells you what’s happening to your own body? Bloodshed investigates this with three young women. Tilly, Miah and Safa all endure debilitating period pain. Following an adolescence with little education, support or relief, they navigate the physical and emotional toll of intensely painful periods while trying to maintain a normal life.
Director Eva Babington adds: 'Bloodshed was inspired by conversations I have had hundreds of times with friends but never seen on screen before. We all chat about (quite literally) the ins and outs of our bodies all the time, yet in seemingly private spaces. Bringing this conversation to the public space, with all its pain, horror, and humour, was at the forefront of my ambition.'
