Calming her anxieties through cultivation of Icelandic Poppies, Agnes unexpectedly befriends a young gardener, Asmund

Agnes struggles with anxiety. One day, she meets Asmund at the garden centre, where he works. Their relationship blossoms modestly and as their feelings grow, one is left cheering them on, whilst being blown away by this quiet drama surrounding bourgeoning feelings of doubt and devotion, which populate the landscape of this film, alongside the poppies of course!

After a recommendation from her therapist, Agnes attempts to calm her anxiety through the growing of Icelandic Poppies - However, in her attempt of doing so she unexpectedly befriends the young gardener, Asmund.

Danish director Anne-Sofie Lindgaard says about the project: ‘Icelandic Poppies’ is a very personal project for me, as part of the script is based on my own experience with anxiety. It is a subject I wanted to portray in a less dark way than it is usually portrayed - and how I myself portrayed it in my project, ‘This is Hardcore’ starring Sandra Kampp. With ‘Icelandic Poppies’ I hope to move the audience with an authentic and delicately beautiful story about human connection, hope and growth.

Working with the brilliant Andrea Heick Gadeberg as 'Agnes' was a truly moving experience. With such a complex theme we developed a certain trust in how we spoke about personal experiences and how we could bounce off that and implement it in the character. What I love about Andrea's performance is that she nailed the internal battle of anxiety - often, others around you can't see it. It is in the minor details - and we made a very big effort of giving the most authentic and respectful depiction of that. Working with the immense talent in this film was such an exciting aspect for me as a filmmaker. Andrea Heick Gadeberg and August Issac Carter are both young, emerging talent from Denmark who I had watched in a few things already. I knew they were capable of so much and the way they inhabited the characters of 'Agnes' and 'Asmund' was amazing. To have seen the industry also acknowledging them in this film has been so giving as a director, because I very much wanted to offer them these roles that allowed them to play something they hadn't done before. I also got to work with Danish acting legend, Line Kruse, starring as the therapist. An actress I have watched in numerous films growing up and suddenly you're there on set seeing her magic presence on camera - and even more importantly, how she supported Andrea in strengthening her performance in those therapy scenes. As a filmmaker, creating a story from personal experience is always intimidating. However in this case it felt so moving going back to the darkest period of my life, but in such a loving and bright way - the small team around me so beautifully crafted what they could in a delicate way, both collaborators I've worked with before such as my DOP Loui Ladegaard and new ones such as my sound designer Atli Arnasson and editor Mira Thu. It all felt so intimate and trusting and it was some of the best days on set I have ever had. We shot on location in the area I am from in Denmark. The gardening centre is actually the gardening centre I've gone to my whole life. Those details just enabled me to feel as the story was so truthfully unfolding in surroundings I felt at home in.'
